Miami's Ryan Powers drafted by Philadelphia Phillies

OXFORD, Ohio (WKRC) -- Ryan Powers was selected in the 22nd round (652 overall) of the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday (June 7) afternoon. Powers becomes the second RedHawk in as many days to be drafted, following Seth Varners selection last night by the Cincinnati Reds. In his junior campaign with the Red and White, Powers stepped up as a reliable option in the rotation. A 6-5 right-hander, Powers led Miami with nine victories, going 9-3 with a 4.25 ERA. He struck out 60 batters in 84.2 innings and posted a 7-1 record with a 2.85 ERA in Mid-American Conference play. In three seasons, he went 10-7 with a 4.70 ERA with six saves in 48 appearances (16 starts). Thirteen of his 16 career starts came this spring. Powers and Varner are the first RedHawks to get drafted since Tyler Melling and Adam Weisenburger were selected in the 2011 draft. The two are the 70th and 71st Miami players to get drafted all-time. Since the 2000 season, 36 Miami players have been drafted with at least one RedHawk hearing his name called in 13 of the past 15 drafts.                                                                       Information provided by Miami University Athletics
