Hagglund Named Preseason All-American by CollegeSoccerNews.com
CINCINNATI - Xavier senior forward Nick Hagglund (Cincinnati, Ohio/ Lakota West HS) has been named to the 2013 College Soccer News preseason All-America first team, as announced by CollegeSoccerNews.com.
Hagglund, who earned XU's first NSCAA All-American award (Second Team) last season, helped lead the Musketeers to their best season in program history. He started all 22 matches for the Blue and White and registered two goals and four assists as Xavier finished the season with a 14-3-5 record, which included the program's first NCAA Tournament at-large bid, tourney victory and third-straight appearance into the 48-team field.
Known as a reliable and athletic center back, the graduate of Lakota West was the 2012 Atlantic 10 Defender of the Year and earned an A-10 first team All-Conference selection. In addition to an All-Conference first team nod and Defensive Player of the Year honor, Hagglund, was also a 2012 NSCAA All-America second team selection, a 2012 College Soccer News All-America third team honoree and was named to the 2012 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List.
In his three seasons on the pitch for Coach Andy Fleming and the Musketeers, Hagglund has been a fixture for Xavier. He's amassed 61 starts, 5,512 minutes played, four goals and eight assists. The Blue & White have recorded 20 shutouts with Hagglund as a member of the backline.
Earlier this summer, the Cincinnati native was named one of the top 10 forwards in the nation by TopDrawerSoccer.com.
Hagglund and the rest of the mens soccer team, recently ranked No. 22 in the 2013 College Soccer News Preseason Poll, kick off the 2013 season with a pair of exhibition matches. The first will be a home game against Belmont, which will be played at 7:00 p.m. on Aug. 18. The exhibition season will close on Aug. 23, as the Musketeers will travel to Fort Wayne, Indiana to take part in the Shindigz National Soccer Festival to play Loyola (IL). The home opener is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start on Sept. 7 against Big Ten foe Northwestern.
