Exterminator encounters 'most amazing sight' in his 40-year career

WINCHESTER, England (Derek Drake) -- A woman in England was tidying up when she found a horrifying sight in the guest bedroom upstairs that had been unattended to for months.

A 3-foot wasp nest.

With the help of an exterminator, John Birkett, who told SkyNews, "It was the most amazing sight I had ever seen" in his 40-year career.

"There was a nice quilt on the bed, and the [homeowner] wanted me to save it," Birkett said. "But when I pulled it... The nest split in half."

He detailed the structure of the giant nest as a wonderfully patterned maze filled with grubs being produced by the adult wasps. The wasps had even eaten an 8 inch hole into the mattress to expand the nest.

"In some ways it was good fun, but I also felt a bit guilty about it," he said. "All these little souls had worked their guts out to produce this. I feel for everything I kill, but they can be quite dangerous, so I had to carry on until there was one left."

Once he began his attack against the wasps, the thousands of insects began swarming at him, covering his protective veil. "All I could do was just keep spraying," he said.

Once the deed was done, Birkett said there was a layer of wasps on the floor about an inch thick.
