Paralyzed patients get new lease on life

LIDO BEACH, Fla. (WKRC) -- Paralyzed patients are getting a new lease on life, by getting out of their wheelchairs.
These folks never even dreamed of surfing or kayaking, but spinal cord injury patients are doing it with the "Empower" program at Stony Brook University in New York.

People like former athlete Jackie Colby are getting a physical and mental boost.

"We've done kayaking," said Colby. "We've done hand cycling, we've done surfing, the whole combination of the experiences that we've had have just really made me more alive."

The program is in its second year and accepts paralyzed patients from all over the country.
