Indianapolis cop shot dead after confronting gunman

INDIANAPOLIS (WKRC) -- A longtime Indianapolis police officer is dead after a gunfight.

Police say Officer Perry Renn was responding to a shots fired report when he confronted a gunman.

Both the officer and suspected gunman were shot. Investigators say the alleged shooter is in critical condition.

Officer Renn was a 22 year veteran of the force. Authorities say Renn was the eighth Indianapolis police officer shot in the last 18 months, and the second of those to lose his life.

This  incident comes less than 24 hours after seven people were shot in an Indianapolis neighborhood known to have several bars.

Police say that shooting may have been triggered by two people bumping into each other in the street.

Police arrested a 23-year-old man on a preliminary charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm, but so far he has not been charged in connection with the shooting.
