Insurance issue keeping village police vehicles idle

NEW MIAMI, Ohio (Larry Davis) -- It's been a week since officers in New Miami have been able to patrol in their cruisers.

It's the latest in a string of financial issues for the small Butler County village.  Police still plan to protect the public, but this is the latest in a string of bad news for New Miami.

You won't find a New Miami police cruiser patrolling the streets.  They are all locked up inside the garage at the police station.  The cars will stay there until the city resolves some issues regarding insurance coverage.

Local 12 has been told the fire department will be making all emergency runs.  Back in 2007 the New Miami Police Department was disbanded and brought back three years later.  It has been working with only one full time employee since that time.  The Chief says he hopes the situation is resolved by the end of this week.
Last month, a judge granted an injunction ordering the village to turn off its speed cameras.  It's not been decided if or when the village will have to repay any of the one-million dollars in fines collected.
