Fire destroys condo roof, families displaced

VILLA HILLS, Ky. (Brad Underwood) -- Fire sweeps through part of a tri-state condo complex leaving several families without a place to call home Friday night.

And if it wasn't for one brave neighbor, they could have lost even more.  The neighbor, Jason Beck, alerted neighbors of the fire by banging on doors.  Beck says he was sleeping when the fire started.

"I woke up and smelled smoke and I saw some flames.  And I tried to put the flames out, could not, and just ran out and yelled, 'Fire!'"

Just feet away Brian Whitaker says when he and his son heard Beck yell fire, they rushed to help.  At that point, it was too late.

"Oh it was just... the smoke and the flames were already billowing out along the roof," Whitaker said.

When he realized it was too much to handle, Whitaker said he knew it was time to get people out of there.  They ran door to door ringing doorbells and alerting neighbors of the flames.

Assistant Chief Chuck Dietz with the Ft. Mitchell Fire Department said they had water, but could have used some more while fighting the flames.

All residents made it out safely and unharmed.

Firefighters have not yet determined what sparked the fire.  The Red Cross is helping the families who are displaced.
