Former Indiana law enforcement officer to plead guilty
FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ind. (WKRC) -- A former Franklin County reserve deputy, charged with child exploitation, plans to plead guilty.
Authorities say Derek Walton exchanged child pornography pictures and videos through email to another offender in 2011. In the emails, Walton discussed child porn and his history of collecting and trading it. Federal law enforcement officers found the emails while investigating another suspect. Walton accessed that email account 29 times over two months in 2011, at the Franklin County Security Center.
As a result of that investigation, agents searched his Liberty home in August of 2013. Inside, they found a thumb drive hidden behind a mirror in Walton's bedroom, along with a video camera inside a can in the living room. They found explicit pictures and videos of a 13 or 14 year old girl.
When he's sentenced, Walton faces a minimum of 15 years and up to 60 years in federal prison. He'll also have to register as a sex offender and pay restitution to his victims.
The 31-year-old had been with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office since 2004. He's also served as a jail officer with the Union County Sheriff's Office, and worked for the Richmond and Laurel police departments.
