Man Accused of Killing Woman While on Heroin
AVONDALE, Ohio (Angela Ingram) -- Police file charges against a driver for slamming into two people, killing one and seriously hurting the other.
Ryan Culver is accused of hitting Monisa Barnes and a 12-year-old girl in Avondale last Friday. Barnes died and now her family is looking for justice.
Police say Culver was high on heroin when he hit Monisa Barnes and the girl before wrecking his car. Monisa's loved ones want to see Culver in court. They say he took away a special part of their family.
Barnes valued education and the day she was hit by a car she was on her way to do something nice for her kids.
"She was a caring, lovable Mama. She was going to go pick up a check actually for her kids. She was always about her kids and she just gave us everything she had. She gave us the world."
Last Friday the 43-year-old mother of four was hit along with a 12-year-old girl who had just gotten off the bus from school. Ryan Culver was driving the car. Police say Culver's car ran off Vine Street at Glenwood, hitting Monisa and the girl before crashing into a building.
Monisa lived about eight hours afterwards but she died at the hospital.
"Of course it was my mother and it's right down the street from where we live at every time we walk outside. It's like a heavy burden on top of us because it was mother and her family lives on this street."
Culver and his two passengers were treated for minor injuries. But Monisa's family is left with a void. Her daughter says she has forgiveness in her heart for Culver, but the family still wants to see him answer to the charges.
"Her favorite job was being a caretaker of her children, her household, her family, being a supporter, you know. Giving what she had so that someone else could have a better day, a smile, encouraging words. You know it's hurtful to us all."
Monisa Barnes was not related to the girl who was hit. Police haven't released any information on how the girl is doing. There's a memorial fund set up for Monisa Barnes at Fifth Third Bank.
The funeral is set for next Tuesday morning at Lee Chapel AME Church in O'Bryonville. Monisa's visitation is at 9:30a.m. with the funeral following at 11a.m.
