Neighbors identify Fairfield man shot by police
FAIRFIELD, Ohio (Brad Underwood) -- Neighbors identify 23-year-old Caleb Surface as the man shot and killed by a veteran police officer after a brief incident Saturday night in Fairfield.
According to a neighbor on Spyglass Hill Court, the man killed by a police officer last night was 23-year-old Caleb Surface.
Police were called to Surface's father's house regarding a physical altercation between the two. Since the shooting, dozens of friends and family have posted on social media about the shooting and Caleb.
In the daylight you can see footprints in the snow. The final steps of 23-year-old Caleb Surface.
"I heard two gun shots. Jumped up and went to the window, very much concerned." Mike Nagy lives just feet from where the 23-year-old was shot and killed by a police officer. Nagy has a ten-year-old son of his own. He says his son left the house just minutes before the gun shots, causing him to immediately see what happened. "At that point I put my head out the window, the neighbor's dogs were going crazy. I yelled out, is that a young boy, hat was my concern, officers said get back in the house."
Police say the 23-year-old forced his way into his father's home, followed by a fight. When police got to the home, Caleb ran off. After that, it's unclear what happened, but the end result was an officer firing several shots, killing Surface.
Earlier in the day, Caleb took to Facebook. One post read: Beer and a gun, what to do?
Later on: Last words?
Since the shooting, Facebook posts on family members pages show an outpouring of sympathy and support for the Surface family.
Fairfield police have not released the name of the officer involved in the shooting. However we're told the officer is a 10-year veteran of the force and is on paid administrative leave.
