Salt Supplies Low in Local Community
MONROE, Ohio (WKRC) -- More snow on the way is a problem for municipalities dealing with road salt supplies.
Monroe is one of them now rationing what it has left. There has been so much snow that they have depleted their salt supply.
Main roads in Monroe will still be treated, but side streets and subdivisions will not receive any salt at all.
But, the city of Monroe received a very special delivery Friday. Salt! A semi delivered 24 tons of salt to the Monroe Public Works department. Later, a second truck delivered another 22 tons. The lack of salt is not a cost issue, it is a supply issue.
The recent winter storms have hit municipalities like Monroe very hard. The city has used a lot of salt. The shortage on salt has forced the community to restrict treatment to only main streets and hills. Subdivisions will be plowed but see no salt.
Monroe is not alone, the Butler County Engineers office is also conserving. Only a thin layer of salt will be put down this weekend.
Butler County trucks will be hitting the street Friday night just before midnight. Some communities are already declaring preemptive snow emergencies.
