Hamilton County Sheriff embraces social media

CINCINNATI (Adam Clements) -- Social media can be used to put bad guys behind bars. The Hamilton County Sheriff likes the idea and plans to fight crime one click at a time.

It's an initiative, as Sheriff Jim Neil puts it, to bring the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department out of the dark ages and it starts with embracing social media. Friday, the sheriff introduced his new website, Facebook, Twitter handle and blog. All will be used by his deputies and he's asking citizens to do the same.

One way is the new text a tip program, and that's exactly what it sounds like. If you see something, you have a crime to report, or just information, you can now text it directly to the sheriff's department.

Sheriff Neil says this is a way to connect with as many citizens possible and in the day and age of social media, doing it this way just makes sense. "When you form alliances it's not just with the public sector but with the private sector. That's always been my vision to form alliances as well as to better utilize the resources we have including our human resources and this is a resource to be more efficient and effective in our mission."

Sheriff Neil says the social media outlets will also be used as way for for the public to offer feedback to the sheriff's department. He says stepping up his efforts in an ever growing digital age is a priority.
