Inmate Challenges Execution Method

PREBLE COUNTY, Ohio (WKRC) -- Attorneys trying to stop the execution of a condemned Preble County killer say Ohio's untried execution method will cause the inmate agony and terror.

Defense lawyers claim the two-drug combination will not properly sedate death row inmate Dennis McGuire and he will experience a suffocation-like condition known as "air hunger."  In federal court filings Tuesday, the lawyers asked that McGuire's execution be delayed while they challenge the proposed lethal injection system.

The 53-year-old McGuire is scheduled to die January 16th for the 1989 rape and stabbing death of Joy Stewart.  Governor Kasich rejected clemency for McGuire Tuesday.
