WWII veteran honored with Congressional Gold Medal
KENNEDY HEIGHTS, Ohio (WKRC) -- A Kennedy Heights church helps give one of its members the highest honor Congress can bestow.
G. Robert Smith is a Columbia Township resident and a World War II veteran. He's 96-years-old.
His church, Kennedy Heights Presbyterian, hosted a ceremony for him. He was presented a Congressional Gold Medal Sunday, the day before Martin Luther King Junior Day.
Smith served from 1943 to 1946 as a Montford Point marine. That was a segregated group of African-American marines. They got the name from the swampy corner of Camp Lejeune where they trained.
Because of his musical background, he played the glockenspiel in the marching band. Roughly 400 Montford Point marines received the medals. It took officials awhile to track down Smith because he relocated several times.
