Adoptive mother pleads guilty in abandonment case

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (WKRC) -- The Middletown mother of an adopted 9-year-old boy she tried to return, pleads guilty to a charge of attempted abandonment.  A judge handed down a suspended 90 day sentence for Lisa Cox Monday. The charge against her husband, Cleveland, was dropped.

The Liberty Township couple had raised the boy since he was a baby. Officials say Lisa  Cox believed the boy was a threat to the family's safety. The couple left him at Children's Services.

The Butler County prosecutor, Mike Gmoser, says the charge was dropped against Cleveland Cox, because a conviction would have a negative impact on his security clearance, necessary for employment. Lisa's plea of attempted abandonment, is a reduced charge. Gmoser says she has accepted responsibility.

The family is working on reuniting with their adopted son.
