Property Tax Cut or Sales Tax Hike in Hamilton County

CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- People living in Hamilton County could have a property tax cut or a tax increase all because of the same issue.

The Sales Tax Fund, which pays off both the Paul Brown Stadium and Great American Ball Park, is not bringing in enough money. Commissioners reduced a property tax rebate, which was part of the Stadium Sales Tax deal.  County Commissioner Greg Hartman says the rebate could increase by twenty per cent saving the owner of a 100,000 dollar house another seven dollars a year, while keeping the Stadium Fund solvent.

I believe as we sit here today, this is an amount that can responsibly be given back and keep the Stadium Fund on sound footing for five years, Hartman says.

Commissioner Chris Monzel wants to restore the entire rebate, not just a percentage.  Commissioner Todd Portune wants to raise the county sales tax for five years. He says the shortfall in the Stadium Fund would be covered by anyone who buys things in Hamilton County. A decision is expected Wednesday.
