Missing Boy Found In East Price Hill

The start of a new school year always brings concerns to parents, but having their child go missing at school is usually not one of them.

That was a concern for one family today as a five year old boy disappeared after arriving at Rees E. Price Academy in East Price Hill.

The boy was found in the wrong classroom.

As Local 12 News Reporter Larry Davis shows us, the students aren't the only ones learning valuable lessons.

5-year-old Sumiir Smith attends the school off of Considine Avenue, but shortly after he arrived Tuesday morning, he went missing.

The school went on lockdown as Cincinnati Police searched the building for the missing boy.

His family showed up, anxious and angry over his disappearance. Two hours later, Sumiir turned up safe at the school.

Administrators say Sumiir went to breakfast shortly after arriving at school.  A sixth grade student leader walked him to the wrong class. Sumiir didn't hear his name during a roll call and the teacher didn't realize he wasn't supposed to be there.

Principal Shelly Stein says teachers may not be familiar with all of their students this early in the school year. They will be after today.

The boy's grandmother thinks the situation could have been resolved sooner, if family members were allowed to search for the boy.

And Sumiirr Smith's grandmother tells us if it's up to her, her grandson will not be returning to school here. He will be enrolling somewhere else, but that remains to be seen.

The principal at Price Academy was to have met with school teachers and staff after dismissal today to go over procedures to make sure something like this does not happen again.
