Bracken County Mom, Kids Identified As Fire Victims
The Bracken County Coroner on Monday released the names of the five family members killed in a devastating house fire in that community early on Saturday morning.
The coroner says 35 year old Rani Doss and her children-16 year old Dylan Eldred, 13 year old Michae Doss, and six year old twins Bradley and Emily Doss all died of smoke inhalation when their home caught on fire.
Officials says the fire was discovered around 2 a.m. Saturday at the home on Brooksville-Powersville Road in Powersville, Kentucky, a community in central Bracken County.
The coroner says there were a total of eight people in the home. Two escaped. One male adult survivor was flown by medical helicopter to University of Cincinnati Medical Center where he was last listed in stable condition.
All that remained of the house was a shell.
A man who lives near the house that burned, Michael Thomas, said he was woke up to pounding on his door. People in the area were being alerted to the fire because it was so strong and there was fear it could spread.
"Flames were towering 50-60 feet over the top of the house," he told Local 12 reporter Adam Clements."It's a big old two-story house. All the flames were rolling out of the windows. The only thing I was thinking was 'Where's everybody at?'"
On Saturday evening, there was a candlelight vigil at Bracken County High School in honor of the victims. Close to 200 people attended. The crowd was clearly shocked and devastated. There was a balloon launch in memory of the five that died.
Fire investigators say it's still not clear what caused the fire.
