3 people in police custody after lock down at Central Connecticut State U
NEW BRITAIN, CT (WFSB) -- Sources told Eyewitness News that three people are in police custody after a suspicious person carrying a gun was seen on the Central Connecticut State University campus in New Britain on Monday afternoon.
Students were being advised to stay indoors and stay away from windows because a "campus emergency" Monday afternoon.
Federal sources told Eyewitness News an active shooter situation was reported at CCSU and the campus was placed into a lockdown around noon.
"We will communicate when we have more info. This is not a drill," university officials tweeted around noon.
Students told Eyewitness News an unidentified man, who was possibly wearing a mask and camouflage pants, with a gun was on campus.
Sources told Eyewitness News that three people were arrested, however no official word of an arrest has been released.
No shots were fired and no injuries were reported.
The New Britain Police Department along with police surrounding towns, state police SWAT and state police major crimes unit were called to the CCSU campus.
Officers surrounded F. Don James Hall, which is a residence hall on the New Britain campus. The mayor's office said a building had been secured.
Campus officials kept the media and students updated via the university Twitter account, reminding students to stay indoors and away going near windows.
"This is not a drill. Stay indoors. This is an emergency," the university tweeted around 12:45 p.m.
New Britain Mayor Tim O'Brien, who went to the campus, said its an "an ongoing investigation" and did not comment further on the incident at CCSU.
The CCSU campus remained on lockdown as 2:30 p.m.
"Shelter in place. Police continue to search for suspicious person," the CCSU website stated around 1:45 p.m.
HALS Academy and Holmes Elementary schools in New Britain were placed into a "modified lockdown" after the "campus emergency."
Classes at CCSU were canceled for rest of Monday just before 3 p.m.
Road closures were reported at Cedar Street, East Street and Paul Manafort Drive.

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) - Police officers are responding to a report of a suspicious person at Central Connecticut State University.
The campus in New Britain was locked down Monday and students were urged to remain indoors and away from windows.
Lt. J. Paul Vance, a state police spokesman, says university police asked for assistance related to a report of a suspicious person. A TV station in the area is reporting a masked man with a gun was spotted on campus. There are no reports of any shots fired.
University spokesman Mark McLaughlin says police urged officials to alert everyone on campus to get inside. He says the emergency did not appear to be related to a shooting.
Several police cars are at the campus. More than 12,000 students attend the university, which has a 182-acre campus.
New Britain police did not immediately respond to requests for information, and no further details were immediately available.
