Gay Marriage Activist Dies
CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- A man who, along with his spouse, led a successful challenge to Ohio's ban against same-sex marriage has died.
John Arthur passed away from Lou Gehrig's disease. Arthur and his same-sex partner, James Obergefell, were legally married in another state. The Over the Rhine couple won a lawsuit that forces the County Coroner to recognize the marriage on Arthur's death certificate.
Their case opened the door for a class action suit challenging Ohio's ban against same-sex marriage. The group Equality Ohio released this statement today:
"All of us here at Equality Ohio extend our sympathy to Jim Obergefell and the family of John Arthur. We will continue to work for marriage equality in John's honor. Their story is now woven into all of our stories. John Arthur will not be forgotten."
Arthur died early Tuesday morning. He was 47.
