Former School Band Director Explains Texts to Student
COVINGTON, Ky. (Angenette Levy) -- The former Holmes High School band director who resigned amid allegations he sent inappropriate text messages to a student denied wrongdoing Monday.
Jared Murray is under investigation by the Covington Police Dept. Murray resigned as band director of Holmes High School earlier this month. He said he was given the option to resign or be fired.
"I was just thinking of the kids. Maybe this would be one less distraction if I were to just step away out of the situation," Murray said.
Murray admits he sent texts to a 15-year-old girl and other students. But, he said that wasn't unusual. He said he never sent photos to the girl or messages that were inappropriate.
"The band students. I consider them as my individual daughters or sons. What appears is they took one little snippet of a conversation out of context. That's what I feel," Murray said.
When asked what he said that was taken out of context, Murray replied: "One that was presented to me was 'are your folks here or are your grandfolks here'. And that was taken from a conversation the student presented to me that they were going away for the weekend. They were excited hoping that the entire family got to go and so I just asked did the entire family get to go on your trip this weekend."
Murray said the student was having trouble at home and he was trying to help her. He and his defense team, led by attorney Eric Deters and Chris Roach, are considering filing a defamation lawsuit against the girl's family and the Covington School District.
"There's still a part of me that cares about the child. But if somebody's going to throw me under the bus per se, I have to look out for myself and my family first."
An attorney for the student's family said Monday "the truth is the best defense." Brandon Voelker said the girl's family had not defamed Murray.
Kenton Co. Commonwealth Attorney Rob Sanders told Local 12 News that his office is working with Covington Police on the investigation. He said a decision about whether or not Murray will face charges has yet to be made.
