Boy Builds Recess Chess Board
MASON, Ohio (Tiffany Wilson) -- Kings, Queens, Pawns and Rooks move to the center of recess in Mason.
Local 12's Tiffany Wilson explains why a high school junior spent months building giant chess boards for the intermediate school.
Just call them grade-school grandmasters. It's a mind game that requires these sixth graders to move their bodies as well. But before the kids at Mason Intermediate could advance the first pawn Daniel Eichler put in months of work, raised a thousand dollars and even sacrificed his birthday to dig dirt.
He says, To actually do the building part, it took about two weekends worth of energy and I worked on this on my 16th birthday, so that was a lot of fun for that.
These super-sized chess boards started as Daniel's Eagle Scout Project. Now hundreds of kids use them every day.
I'm really proud of how they turned out. I like chess it's a really good game of wits kind of, I know recess likes to involve physical activity, but a lot of activity we do with our minds and we look over that sometimes.
Principal Greg Sears sees the boards as a great tactical play, It gives our kids an opportunity to be active and exercise their brains. It was a perfect opportunity for us and Daniel did a great job.
Daniel's expected to achieve his Eagle Scout rank soon.
As for checkmate, well, the battle continues.
