Girl Found in Gypsy Settlement
LONDON, England (Alphonso Van Marsh) -- Police in Greece are still trying to find the parents of a little girl discovered last week in a gypsy settlement.
Thousands of people have responded to an appeal from police. The girl, known only as Maria, is seen playing in a video with the woman accused of abducting her. Police found her during a drug raid last week in a gypsy community in central Greece.
Maria is now thought to be five or six years old.
An investigator became suspicious because she didn't look anything like the people claiming to be her parents. The 40 year old woman and 39 year old man faced a court hearing Monday. They are accused of kidnapping Maria and illegally obtaining her birth records.
Police suspect the girl is a victim of child trafficking. But the couple's lawyer says if that were true they would have sold her instead of spending money to care for her.
Woman relatives say the girl has been in the settlement since she was a baby. But investigators say Maria speaks only a few words of their language.
Greek social services are taking care of the girl now while investigators pursue thousands of phone and email tips from around the world, including the United States.
