Video of Local Gas Station Attack Released
The robbery of a gas station in Norwood left the clerk bruised and was captured by a surveillance camera.
On Sunday night just before 11, a man who appeared to to be a customer approached the counter at the Shell gas station on Williams Ave. and Smith Rd. The man asked for cigarettes and then demanded money. When the cashier didn't give the man the money he walked behind the counter and grabbed the clerk and punched him in the face. The robber grabbed the cash drawer and ran away.
"This is Shell gas station. Somebody robbed the store," the shaken cashier told a 911 dispatcher. The African-American man wore a black t-shirt and tan baseball cap.
"He walked right in. There were customers in the store at the time and he decided he was going to make his move right there," said Lt. Tom Williams of the Norwood Police Dept.
Monday afternoon regular customers of the gas station said they were disgusted when they heard about the robbery. The cashier is described as a nice, hardworking man.
"That's bad. I mean that is really a bad deal. Especially with people in the store," said customer Chris Swafford after watching video of the attack. The cashier did not suffer serious injuries. He declined Local 12's request for an on camera interview but said by phone he had a bruise on his face and felt dizzy.
Police are hoping someone recognizes the man and calls police.
"It's abhorring to see somebody walk right in, in front of witnesses, and just blatantly go behind the counter punch that guy for no reason at all and take that cash register. We want to get this guy," Lt. Williams said.
