Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - The Carolina Hurricanes have activated forward Tuomo Ruutu and placed defenseman Joe Corvo on injured reserve.

Ruutu underwent hip surgery in December and missed the team's first 29 games. He has been skating with the squad for about a week.

The 30-year-old native of Finland had 18 goals and 16 assists for 34 points in 72 games with the Hurricanes last season. He is entering his sixth season with Carolina and ninth in the NHL.

Ruutu has 129 goals and 299 points in 532 NHL games with the Hurricanes and Chicago Blackhawks. He was selected by Chicago with the ninth overall pick of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Corvo, sidelined with a lower body injury, has four goals and seven assists for 11 points in 23 games this season. He is the team's leading scorer among defensemen.
