Recap: Phoenix vs. Los Angeles

Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Keith Yandle scored two goals and Jason LaBarbera made 39 saves as the Phoenix Coyotes earned a much-needed 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday.

Matthew Lombardi was credited with the game-winning goal in the second period for Phoenix, which was 1-5-3 over its previous nine games but pulled within two points of the eighth spot in the Western Conference.

"The only way you're going to have a chance is if you win, to get two points," Phoenix head coach Dave Tippett said of his team's playoff chances.

Justin Williams scored the only goal for the Kings, who went 3-1-1 on their five-game road trip. Jonathan Quick surrendered three goals on 30 shots to take the loss.

"Not the way we wanted to finish, but we had some strong games, had some character wins," Kings forward Anze Kopitar said of the road trip.

Kyle Chipchura set up the game's first goal as he passed to Yandle from behind the net. Yandle was streaking towards Quick from the left circle and put in his seventh of the year at the 11:02 mark of the opening period.

Williams tied it off a lucky bounce just 1:10 later, as his shot from the right boards banked off Coyotes defenseman Michael Stone and into the net.

With 8:55 remaining in the second, Lombardi provided the go-ahead goal, as he gathered Rob Klinkhammer's pass from the neutral zone and beat Quick with a backhand despite Tyler Toffoli being draped over his back.

After failing on all 16 of their shots in the middle period, the Kings only registered nine shots on net in the third, and Yandle's odd-angle slap shot somehow slipped by Quick with 2:53 remaining to seal the win.

Game Notes

Phoenix improved to 10-0-1 when leading after two periods ... The Kings won the season series, 3-2 ... Chipchura recorded two assists.
