Recap: Phoenix vs. Columbus

Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Martin Hanzal netted two third-period goals to lift the Phoenix Coyotes to a 5-3 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Radim Vrbata, David Moss and Kyle Chipchura each scored in the first period for the Coyotes, who have won three of their last four games. Vrbata suffered a lower-body injury later in the game and did not return.

Keith Yandle collected three assists, while Mike Smith earned the win with 17 saves.

Jared Boll had a goal and an assist for Columbus, which has lost the first two stops on its six-game road trip. Steve Mason surrendered four goals on 34 shots.

"We ran out of gas and it doesn't help when you have to kill seven times," Blue Jackets coach Todd Richards said.

Hanzal snapped a 3-3 tie on a power play, converting Yandle's pass through the crease at the 8:18 mark of the third.

With 3:33 remaining, Hanzal went to the penalty box for hooking. The Blue Jackets failed on the man advantage, and Hanzal iced the win with an empty- netter with 1:04 to play.

"It was an important two points," Hanzal said of the victory. "These kind of games you have to win if you want to make the playoffs."

Boll opened the scoring 2:09 into a goal-happy first period. Moss lit the lamp at 5:30, then Vrbata gave Phoenix the lead 90 seconds later.

Columbus, however, drew even at the eight-minute mark on Matt Calvert's tally.

The Coyotes went back in front when Chipchura scored in the slot off a feed from Yandle with 2:20 left in the frame.

Boll set up Derek MacKenzie for the equalizer at 5:16 of the second period.

Game Notes

Steve Sullivan had two assists for the Coyotes ... Phoenix finished 1-for-7 on the power play, while the Blue Jackets were 0-for-3.
