Recap: NY Rangers vs. Philadelphia

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Ryan Callahan scored the goal that proved to be the deciding tally in the New York Rangers' 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers.

However, the Rangers' captain left Tuesday's game after being injured in a third-period scrum with Philadelphia's Maxime Talbot. Callahan, who gave New York a 2-0 lead with a power-play goal in the second period, tussled with Talbot at 4:42 of the third. Sensing Callahan was in distress, Talbot eased up and motioned for the trainers. Callahan got to his skates and left the ice hunched over, favoring his left shoulder/arm.

Michael Del Zotto had the other goal for the Rangers, who have won consecutive games since losing by the same score to the Flyers last Thursday. New York goalie Henrik Lundqvist made 26 saves.

Ilya Bryzgalov played well in defeat for Philadelphia, stopping 26 shots.

Offense continues to be a problem area for the Flyers, who have scored more than two goals in just one of their seven contests this season. Not surprisingly, their record stands at 2-5-0.

"There was opportunities," Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette remarked, "we didn't cash in."

Kimmo Timonen supplied the lone tally Tuesday night, and it came on a power play in the third period.

Wayne Simmonds won a battle for the puck in the right corner and dished to Timonen, who fired a wrister from between the circles that beat Lundqvist high on the glove side at 7:09.

The Rangers were able to kill a pair of power plays later in the period, including one inside the final five minutes.

"Obviously the last ten minutes of the game we kept taking penalties. Our guys stepped up and played really well in front," Lundqvist said.

Del Zotto fired a slap shot from just inside the blue line past Bryzgalov's right pad and the post 1:57 into the game.

Danny Briere nearly supplied the equalizer just beyond the nine-minute mark of the first period, but Lundqvist stopped both of the Philadelphia forward's bids from in close before getting aid from his teammates.

The Flyers squandered a glorious chance at tying the game when they failed to score on an extended 5-on-3 power play in the second period. Brad Richards went off for holding, then was joined in the penalty box 43 seconds later by Derek Stepan. Stepan fired the puck over the glass from the defensive zone, resulting in a delay-of-game minor.

Moments after the Rangers returned to even strength, Talbot was whistled for tripping and New York converted on the subsequent power play.

Rick Nash moved to the slot and sent a pass down low to Del Zotto at the left post. Bryzgalov denied the New York defenseman, but Callahan knocked in the rebound for his 200th NHL point.

"We had really good puck movement on that power play," said New York head coach John Tortorella. "The past couple of games, we were getting much more movement out of it, and obviously we scored a big goal on it tonight."
