CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- University of Cincinnati defensive back Zach Edwards (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) was named American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 2, 2013, the league office announced Monday.

Edwards, a true freshman, helped Cincinnati improve to 3-1 in the American Athletic Conference as he led a Bearcats defense that limited Memphis to 232 yards of offense in a 34-21 win on Wed., Oct. 30, 2013. Edwards had a game- and career-high 11 tackles, including one tackle for loss, and had a fumble recovery that led to a Cincinnati touchdown on the following play.

Edwards has 38 tackles with two interceptions in his freshman season.

Wide receiver Anthony McClung (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) was named to the league’s weekly honor roll after setting a career high with nine receptions against the Tigers. His catches went for 98 yards and a TD, his fifth of the season.

The Bearcats (6-2, 3-1) return home for the first time in nearly a month Saturday, taking on SMU inside Nippert Stadium at noon ET. UC will honor its 17-member senior class in a pregame ceremony this weekend.
