YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKRC) -- Heidi Schlegel scored 22 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Youngstown State women's basketball team to a 67-53 victory over Northern Kentucky University at the Beeghly Center on Wednesday evening.

Youngstown State (1-2) entered the contest having made only 11.1 percent (4-for-36) of its attempts from behind the 3-point line but finished the night 11-for-19 from behind the arc.  The Penguins had seven different players hit a 3-pointer led by Liz Hornberger's four treys.  Schlegel connected on three of her five attempts, while Karen Flagg went 3-for-8.

Flagg and Hornberger each finished with 11 points.  Flagg led Youngstown State with seven rebounds, and Hornberger recorded four assists.

Melody Doss scored 12 of her team-high 15 points in the second half to lead NKU (2-2) for the fourth consecutive game.  She finished 6-for-8 from the floor and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.  Doss, the reigning Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week for the second straight week, also blocked five shots against Youngstown State.

The Penguins used a 27-6 run early in the first half to turn a 5-3 deficit into a 30-11 advantage over the Norse behind 8-for-9 shooting from behind the 3-point arc with 9:32 remaining before the half.  Sarah Kinch then scored six straight points followed by two free throws from Lauren White to cut the lead to 30-19, but Youngstown State closed the half with a  9-4 run to take a 39-23 advantage into the break.

The Norse connected on just 23.1 percent from the floor in the first half and were limited to 2-for-16 shooting from 3-point range, while the Penguins hit 43.8 percent of their shots from the field, including a blistering 69.2 from behind the 3-point line.

NKU opened the second half with an 8-3 run to cut the deficit to 42-31 behind four straight points from Kaitlyn Gerrety, but Youngstown State responded with 9-2 spurt capped by a Schlegel 3-pointer to push the lead back to 18 (51-33) with 12:18 left to play.  The Norse were unable to get any closer than 12 the rest of the way.

White finished with a career-high 10 points, while Kinch also recorded a career best with eight points for NKU.  Kelley Wiegman earned her first start of the season and scored a career-high five points.  Wiegman also grabbed six rebounds.

The taller Penguins outrebounded the Norse by a slim 39-37 margin, and the Youngstown State defense did not allow NKU to make a 3-pointer in the second half.

Youngstown State evened the all-time series at 1-1.  Last season, NKU earned its first win as an NCAA Division I program on a last-second jumper by Doss to give the Norse a 66-64 victory at The Bank of Kentucky Center on Nov. 27, 2012.
