NKU's Doss earns Atlantic Sun Player of the Week

Updated: Monday, November 11 2013, 02:12 PM EST
MACON, Ga. (WKRC) -- Northern Kentucky University's Melody Doss has earned the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week honor, the league office announced on Monday.

Doss scored 14 of her career-high 24 points in the first half Saturday to lead NKU to a 77-61 victory over Cincinnati at The Bank of Kentucky Center.  The 6-foot junior forward from Greenwood, Ind., also evened her career total with 11 rebounds.

"Melody played very well defensively for us against Cincinnati, and offensively, she took advantage of the opportunities that were created by her teammates and by how the defense was guarding her," NKU head coach Dawn Plitzuweit sad.   "She didn't try to do too much; she simply made good decisions and good plays.  It's a well-deserved honor for Melody, and it's great recognition for our program, too."

Doss finished 10-for20 from the field and added two blocked shots for the Norse.  She hit two 3-point field goals and connected on both free throws she attempted.

With the Norse holding a 45-39 lead, Doss grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed free throw and converted on a layup to push the Norse lead to eight.  Her jumper with less than two minutes remaining in the game gave NKU its second-largest lead of the game at 75-57.

After the first weekend of play, Doss ranks fourth in the conference in scoring and is tied for second in rebounding.

Doss becomes the first NKU women's basketball player to earn A-Sun Player of the Week honors.  Last season, Rianna Gayheart twice received A-Sun Newcomer of the Week accolades, an honor Christine Roush also earned.

NKU returns to the court on Wednesday as the Norse welcome Illinois State to The Bank of Kentucky Center at 7 p.m.
