LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Lexington police have issued an arrest warrant for the mother of a convicted rapist who escaped from a courthouse last month and also say they arrested the convict's former cellmate on charges he helped him flee.
Police say 29-year-old John Buckley IV cut off an ankle bracelet and left the Fayette Circuit Courthouse on July 12, just minutes before a jury returned a guilty verdict.
Buckley is a former Army Ranger. The woman he assaulted has been taken into protective custody.
The Lexington Herald-Leader says Fayette County Sheriff Kathy Witt told news media Thursday that Buckley's former cellmate, 42-year-old John Lee Williams, has been arrested for hindering Buckley's apprehension.
Authorities have said Buckley used his mother's rental car to flee Lexington. She is Sandra Merritt of Colorado.
Police consider Buckley to be dangerous.
