SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A 59-year-old Utah man who wrote his own obituary before he died last week used the opportunity to come clean.

Friends and family of Val Patterson learned Sunday that the man they thought held a doctorate from the University of Utah received the degree thanks to a paperwork mistake and that he never even graduated.

Patterson died from throat cancer on July 10. KSL-TV reports he wrote his own death notice in the first person last fall.

The light-hearted obituary published in the Salt Lake Tribune  also includes a confession to stealing a business' safe. He wrote: "As it turns out, I AM the guy who stole the safe from the Motor View Drive Inn back in June, 1971."

His widow, Mary Jane, told KSL-TV the confessions are true.

If he'd admitted his crimes while alive, he'd probably been thrown off the cult compound...

Typical Mormon; commit your sins and then wait til you're dead to confess them. Won't get him past those white curtains into his Valhalla. Elevator, going down!

Larceny and impersonation are pretty serious offenses. I like he tried to sugar coat his d-bag life in his self written obituary.

Let this be a lesson for John S., Bonnie and Ray L. and Patty B. for robbing my friend's home upon her death. They stole ALL family heirlooms from her children. Have the courage to confess and return the property!

I know it will never happen, and its somewhat cowardly, but if everyone was to come clean in this way a lot of questions could be answered. Many grieving families could have answers. Even if its not the way you want to find out, at least you would know.
