FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - The summer is winding down, and that means buses are gearing up to return students to schools across Kentucky. State police say motorists must be mindful of buses and particularly cautious.

Kentucky had 1,627 school bus-related crashes last year, resulting in 506 injuries and five deaths. Trooper Michael Webb says drivers should watch for buses and be alert for loading or unloading vehicles.

Distracted drivers and people who speed in school zones are a danger. Webb warns against texting while driving or any activity that might divert attention from a bus's flashing lights.

State police say it's against the law to proceed from any direction when a bus is stopped with the stop arm and signal lights activated.

Troopers also encourage parents to review bus safety with their children.

Additionally, the Kentucky State Police might also take into account the speed in which some of these bus drivers drive. I've placed many, many calls to the garage in the Boone County School District to complain about the 2 busses that come barrelling down our small, dead end, residential street (with a speed limit of 20 mph). I always think the children on these busses are at risk, not to mention anyone who happens to be putting out the garbage, or walking to their parked car on the street.

How many of these deaths would have been prevented by seat-belts in the school buses? They only reason I've seen people give for not having them is it "too difficult/time consuming" to keep kids buckled in. Whens the last time anyone has seen a crash dummy test of a school bus?
