CNN - For those who either enjoy or dread working from home, a decision from a prominent search engine company comes as quite a surprise to many.

CNN reported Monday Yahoo's "trailblazing" CEO recently dropped a bombshell on her employees, that a new policy would not allow working from home.

In a memo obtained by the tech blog "All Things D," Yahoo's human resources director outlined the new policy which reads, "To become the absolute best place to work, communication and collaboration will be important, so we all need to be working side-by-side. That is why it is critical that we are all present in our offices."

Workers who telecommute have until June to either get comfortable working out of the office, or leave.

Yahoo's CEO, Marissa Mayer, came from Google. The company likes the collaborative atmosphere when workers have face-to-face time. She's in the middle of a turnaround for Yahoo.

She famously returned to work two weeks after giving birth.

CNN reported Yahoo's new policy was ripped by some commentators.

Richard Branson, the CEO of Virgin, said the decision seems backwards, at a time when remote working is easier and more effective than ever, adding, "Yours truly has never worked out of an office, and never will."

Blogger Lisa Belkin, writing for the Huffington Post, sees it as a direct dig against working parents.

"I think it's backwards. I think it's the opposite of what she should have done," said Belkin.

CEO Eric Holtzclaw of marketing company, Laddering Works, said not only does he let his employees work from hoem, he logs time away from the office as well.

Hey Bigtuna I don't think The CEO was referring to parenting. It's more like we need you here. it's easier for things to get done with everyone in the office. I know where I work, if there is a problem life is smoother if they are on site.

I am sure places like Google and Yahoo have onsite daycares for workers children. I would be shocked if they didnt. But that aside where does it show that a successful parent is a bad parent? My mother and father both worked a lot and my babysitter after school was my sister. All the kids in my family have happy and successful careers and we were even spanked when we acted out as kids. Society will be the downfall of parenting as well as children learning and knowing respecting others!!!!!

Leaving her baby all day just after 2 weeks, she'll be lucky if the baby even knows who she is when she IS with her. But what an emplyee, guess that's all that counts.

@ bandemama:: Very well stated..I'm not a Mom, but I am a parent, and for her to farm her child into the care of someone else is a choice that "she" has the right to make..I wouldn't..I do think that it is wrong for her to take away that choice from the people who may have chosen that as a requisite to accepting employment with Yahoo..

Going back to work 2 weeks after giving birth doesn't make her famous and it certainly doesn't make her a hero. It might say that she's dedicated, but it doesn't make her great. If anything, it makes her a horrible mother. The first weeks and months after a baby are crucial for bonding with the baby. Sounds to me like she's in for a life full of resentment. Resentment from her employees and resentment from her children. Way to go lady. Maybe you should reconsider being a CEO and spend some time being a mom (this is written by a working mom by they way)
