JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. (AP) - Closing arguments are set for Tuesday in the preliminary hearing for Robert Bales, the U.S. soldier accused of killing 16 people in two Afghan villages.
Testimony has ended in the military court proceeding at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state.
Over the weekend, several children were among the witnesses who testified by video link from Afghanistan about the March 11 massacre.
A 7-year-old girl described how she hid behind her father when a gunman came to her village that night. She says the stranger fired and her father died, cursing in pain and anger, and that she was shot in the leg.
An 8-year-old named Zardana also testified about how she was shot in the head and can walk and talk again after months of rehabilitation. Zardana's brother recalled how the gunman continued to shoot after he and others scrambled and yelled "We are children! We are children!"
Nine children were among those killed.
The hearing will help decide whether Bales will face a court-martial. Bales went to Norwood High School.
