Updated Story:

Ohio Governor John Kasich issued a statewide State of Emergency following storms. He released the following statement.

"I’m very concerned with the problems created by the combination of power outages and severe heat, and so I’ve declared an emergency for all of Ohio so that state resources and personnel can help local governments meet the needs and challenges that they face. Ohioans in affected areas should, if possible, stay tuned to their radios or TVs for information on where they can go for assistance. Those without power can call their local 211 numbers for information on where to turn for help. Folks should also knock on their neighbors’ doors to make sure they’re ok and look out for those who they know might need some extra help. Together we’ll get through this.”

Duke Energy said that this will be a multi-day restoration effort for some customers.

If you are without power, residents can go to the following cooling stations set up:
  • South Lebanon/Hamilton Township – 7780 South State Route 48
  • South Lebanon – 285 E Pike St.
  • Mason - 6050 Mason-Montgomery Road
Previous Story:

Severe weather moved through the Tri-State late Friday afternoon, causing damage in many parts of the Local 12 viewing area and knocking out power to thousands of residents.

Duke Energy reported 157,000 homes and businesses without power at 6:30 p.m. Friday. 23,000 of those outages were in Butler County, 63,000 were in Hamilton County and 19,000 were in Warren County. There were also about 25,000 Clermont County customers, 8000 customers in Campbell County and 10,900 in Kenton County in the dark.

The City of Hamilton sent out a media advisory around 5:45 p.m. They provide power to residents and they said about 3400 customers weree without service in Hamilton.  Several circuit breakers tripped, serving the Fordson Heights & Brookwood neighborhoods, Pyramid Hill Blvd and the area around Main & McKinley Avenues.

Duke Energy could not give an estimate as to when power will be restored to all customers. As of 11 a.m. Saturday, about 78,000 customers were still without power.

Local 12's Angenette Levy toured damage in Sharonville and Local 12's Dan Spehler was at the Speedway in Sparta where a giant tent was tossed. You can watch both of their reports.

zayne2000: I think what has happened is the concept of a public utility being responsible for a high service level has gone away. Now riddle me this; most communities that put in running water subsequently outlaw personal wells. I wonder if they would mind if we uncapped those wells again since they don't seem to be able to supply water. Geezzz... most places use water-towers to store and distribute water by gravity. They would only need the pumps to fill the tower. Somebody got some happy-money for letting that through.

Well, here in Highland County, we not only have communities without power, the entire county is without water. Seems whoever is in charge of Highland County Water has not seen it as a priority to have a backup plan, i.e. generators, to prevent something like this from happening. So instead of them being proactive in this situation, we now have to sit an estimated 3-5 days without running water. Seriously, since 9/11, isn’t it a requirement from Homeland Security for Public Works to have these kind of contingence plans in place? Is this going unseen and unnoticed? Shouldn’t someone be on a chopping block for this? This is the second time this has happened, prior was during the bad ice storm a few years back around Christmas. Fool me once, shame on you… Fool me twice…

Was really surprised to learn as much tree damage and power outages had occurred. In our immediate neighborhood there was some wind but I did not consider it severe, Hurricane Ike send some far stronger winds a few years ago. The rain came down strong for a short time, a welcome relief, but overall a drop in the bucket. Then I started to pick up on the tree damage, some of them were large trees not easily pulled out of the ground. I guess our neighborhood must have just had a break in that Outflow Boundary.

Yes, Outflow Boundary came out of nowhere. Nice to know the weather people are dreaming up new terms to confuse us with, not that they are not confusing enough to begin with. So I guess we now have to be concerned where the Outflow Boundary is.

I cant believe it took them 8 hours to get a truck out in our area. Less then 100 yard down the street had power the whole time. Duke a joke didnt learn from last time. Still dont get them trees trim away from power lines. Wish I could send them a bill for the extra money I had to spend last night.. Now the going to buy another power place to become the bigest rip off company in the US. Great NOT.

we all may have blown away, but don't worry anyone. They weren't getting a storm at the races in Sparta. That was the BIG STORY.
