ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Owners of an old-school soda shop in St. Paul, Minn., are being warned to kick the habit and stop stocking novelty candy cigarettes.

City inspectors threatened a misdemeanor citation and $500 fine if Lynden's soda fountain is caught selling the fake smokes again. The Star Tribune reported Wednesday that the offering violated an ordinance barring the sale of candy smokes and cartoon character lighters.

A city spokesman says the warning came after inspectors received and looked into a complaint about the presence of the tobacco-themed products. The ordinance was enacted to discourage youngsters from picking up a real smoking habit.

Shop owner Tobi Lynden says the white candy sticks with the red tips were her best-selling candy item but she pulled them to avoid running afoul of the ordinance.

This is a society that was once smart enough to vote Jimmy Carter out of office. We just had a repeat of the Jimmy Carter Presidency, but this time, the populace has been properly dumbed down. This is just another illustration of just how far down we have gone. I wonder if some of the people around here will smart up when we hit rock bottom. I guess we will find out, we seem to be getting pretty close.

I used to LOVE those candy cigarettes when I was a kid! They were yummy! Making the sale of candy cigarettes a crime is just stupid, but there we are.

Don't you people know that legalizing the use of candy cigarettes will lead to promiscuity, dishonesty, theivery, violent crime, and more serious drug use, such as marijuana, meth and heroin????? Candy cigarettes are the scourge of our nation and we need to devote billions of taxpayer dollars to the eradication of it's evil on our society...After all, what kind of world will we be leaving to our children, if we allow this travesty to continue????? I read somewhere on the internet that the Mayan calender prophecied that "candy cigarettes" would bring about the end of the world..They missed the date, but you can be sure that they are correct about our demise....Have a "HAPPY NEW YEAR"

I used these candy cigarettes to replace my tobacco cigarettes. They were cleaner, cheaper and healthier (sort of) than tobacco products. Thanks to this unconstitutional government intrusion my ONLY option now is to resume my old smoking habit!

I had candy cigarettes when I was little. I did not grow up to smoke real cigarettes.

I have to wonder ,as a society, if we haven't run our course and are just running in circles now.

Stop selling candy. It makes people fat. Stop selling alcohol, it can cause alcoholism. Close down all fast food restaurants. They clog peoples' arteries. Whatever happened to teaching kids personal responsibility? Ridiculous.

Good grief! So today we hold the store owner responsible for children that take up smoking. Maybe the city can raise taxes on candy cigs to reduce their debt.
