PHOENIX (AP) - An Arizona woman is wondering what hurt more: getting stung by a scorpion or seeing her hospital bill after treatment.

Marcie Edmonds says the bill from Chandler Regional Medical Center was more than $83,000. That includes two doses of anti-venom at nearly $40,000 per dose.

The Arizona Republic says Edmonds' insurer has paid more than $57,000 and the suburban Phoenix hospital is asking Edmonds for the balance of about $25,000.

The 52-year-old Ahwatukee Foothills resident was stung in June while opening a box of air conditioner filters in her garage.

Edmonds says an emergency room doctor told her about the Mexican anti-venom Anascorp that could quickly relieve her symptoms, but she was never told about the cost.

Chandler Regional says Edmonds' bill represents the out-of-network costs for her treatment.

Thanks Rosey. ‘8^) Obviously I was just having some fun with this. In all seriousness, this is an AP story and, in all likelihood, an AP headline. Therefore the fault lies with the AP and NOT with WKRC’s crackerjack staff. (WKRC, I’ve paid my penance, how about unbanning my account now?)

It's Scorpion; Not Scorpian! To have typos in the story is one thing, but in the headline? It's an eye sore! Channel 12's editor must not of had time for spell check!

That's one problem with insurance. It creates a mentality of "who cares what it costs." with the patients, and a sneaky way for hospitals to add to their income.

The issue here is that if the hospital is not contracted with an insurance company, they don't have a "contracted amount." They are also not required to write any charges off for services they performed. The insurance compnay will pay based on the usual rate which basically is the rate Medicare would pay or they would get if contracted with an insurance company. Not being contracted allows you to bill above and beyond what you received from the insurance company. You would think after the payment they did receive from the insurance company, they would give this lady a break.

glance are you kidding? Greedy Democrats like the Obamas' bilking the medical community and the patient's when they were within the system, now that they are doing government they are bilking the medical community and the taxpayers on a nationwide scale. The Democrats have increased poverty, yet they dishonestly portray themselves as advocates for the poor. Face it Democrats are bilking nearly everyone except for the liberal elite. They have lavish parties and lavish vacations and record spending at taxpayer expense, meanwhile foreclosures have gone up, gas prices has gone up, the workforce participation has gone down, less people have health care, record number of people on food stamps and other forms of government assistance, record levels of poverty....

marco - you were fortunate. Keep in mind that her symptoms may not have been as insignificant as yours. There are well over 1500 species of scorpions and at least 15-20 of them are fatal...I wouldn't belittle this woman's suffering if you don't know the specifics.

Kinda makes you wonder just who the biggest crook in the US is... oil companies, coal companies, medical communities or is it the politicians that can make up new FDA rules since they're invested in all three!

Going by the "avarage" salary if she was making "nearly" $300,000 a year she was under paid.
