The first school clinics for the H1N1 vaccine kicked off today in Hamilton County -- both the *injectable* and the nasal mist vaccines were given to students in Mariemont --and Saint Bernard. Local 12's Liz Bonis spent the day at Roger Bacon High School -and has more in this flu alert.
The school administrator at Roger Bacon said about 60 percent of the students had consented -- they have about 480 students --and 275 had said yes they would get the H1N1 Vaccine. One of those students was Malayna, she also has a parent that works here --and she's a busy student, plays volleyball, is very active -and she says getting the flu would really interfere with her day to day life and school activities.
"
When you guys talk to each other are you really concerned about this flu? Yeah, there's been a lot of people out that say that they've had it --but I'm not really sure if they really do."
One of the things we did ask was how they selected this school --and it's based on population that consented , and how many doses of the vaccine they have --they want to make sure they can do the entire school in one day. Tim Ingram, Hamilton County Health Commissioner: "Based on the amount of vaccine that we have, we want to start in those schools, which we know we can pretty much finish that population that has consented for H1N1."
Rick Sollman is principal: "It's gonna help, even the kids who didn't get the vaccination it's gonna also benefit them that their classmates did decide to get it in my opinion, and we're gonna have a healthier school"
Starting as early as Monday they'll move on. School clinic dates for Indiana and Northern Kentucky have not yet been announced.
