Truth Matters, Ohio might have more welfare and section 8 but you've got to realize we have more people living in Ohio, more cities, more everything so those numbers will be higher. I'm not defending Obama but you have to be a realist when it comes to numbers and facts.

A family of 4 earning $20,000 a year gets a $5000-7000 tax credit (free money) each year. They are also eligible for a food stamp subsidy. I don't feel like calculating it right now but they probably get free food. That saves around $5000 yr. So the family earning $20,000 is really earning the equivalent of $31,000. You just can't trust numbers that come from the government, and you cannot trust govt programs that reward poor people for bad choices. There are enormous numbers of poor that smoke, for example. Take that family with 2 adults. If both adults smoke 2 packs per day (not uncommon), they spend approximately $600 per month on cigarettes. There goes that elusive rent money.

First of all I feel for those who suffer and by that I mean truly are in a bad situation. However, getting food stamps and you have an iphone, laptop, xbox 360 and momma has her nails done is not acceptable. If some of these people would give up their lifestyles that they have no right to not working and screwing the system, maybe their children could eat.I work in the health field and active in my childs school and trust me I see it all. Having a medicard and a Coach purse doesnt mix. the poor kids who have no mittens or hats yet mommy has her hair done and nails. Makes me sick. Period. I guarantee one goes in some homes you may be surprised at the luxuries in it. Yet, no food on the table.

Don't get me wrong, there are those family's out there who struggle and work 2-3 jobs without having those items in the house hold. I just don't feel like you get enough information with these reports about poverty. Poverty is not having high dollar electronics at your finger tips. Ask your grandparents what hard times were like back in the 20s and 30s. As a country we tend to feel like someone owes it to us and we need those material things in order to survive instead of worrying about food, rent, car insurance so we can drive to work (if you even have a job).

Cincy84-You are so correct! I personally know a few families who have plenty of money tied up in i-phones, TV's, X-Box's, PS3, etc., but have a hard time paying rent and feeding their kids.

Surprised?! I'm not, and it's not just Kentucky either. I'd like more information on this report though, for example, those living in "poverty" how many own a XBOX, PS3, parents have smart phones, flat screens, iPads, coach purses, things like that...trust me, living in poverty is a major issue in this country but so is people living within their means.
