WINNSBORO, La. - State police say a 20-year woman suffering from extensive burns apparently made up a story about being set on fire by three men wearing white hoodies who wrote the initials KKK and a racial slur on her car. Instead, authorities said Tuesday she burned herself and then fabricated the story about being attacked.

On Sunday at 8 p.m. Sharmeka Moffitt called 911 from a walking trail in Winnsboro and told authorities she had been doused in flammable liquid by three men wearing hoodies. She suffered extensive burns on more than half her body and was taken to LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport for treatment.

After two days of investigating the case, authorities on Tuesday said the evidence showed she apparently set herself on fire.

CBS affiliate KNOE in Monroe reports police found her fingerprints on a lighter, as well as DNA evidence on a charcoal fluid lighter bottle near the scene. They also said they believe she was the one who wrote "KKK" on her car. Authorities offered no possible motives for the incident.

Moffitt is reportedly still in critical condition.

I can't believe the thought she had to have put into this and couldn't come up with something better than setting herself on fire.

Maybe this crazy person will live long enough to explain, if she wants to, why she did such a thing. To hurt someone who she got mad at? Probably. The person she hurt was herself. Can you imagine the pain she is in. Over half of her body burned. She will probably die from this stupid thing she did. And the person she hoped to hurt will go on living their lives and forget she ever existed. Sick person. Put chills on me to think about burning my finger much less 1/2 of my body. And then to try and blame it on the KKK. How racist is that. Can't imagine anyone pouring stuff on you and setting you on fire for something silly. Dumb woman. And think about it. How much will the taxpayers of Louisiana put for her case. A million dollars or close to it.

Is she going to be charged with a hate crime?

Blue collar, I just read your post and I believe if she survives she'll just commit suicide - as she obviously tried to do here - but will do so more "quietly" since her plan went wrong and she's been exposed, so to speak.

Our country should take a harsh stance on folks who lie about being the victim of a hate crime. This woman, if she lives through this, should suffer consequences for her lie - consequences above and beyond the scars and pain she'll endure due to the burn injuries. Then again, selective reduction may take care of things on this one.
