The National Retail Federation says this year 170 million people plan to celebrate Halloween.
That's seven out of ten of us, up 3% from last year.
The retailers' group says the average person will spend $79.82.
So, if you haven't gotten a costume together, Ray Cappel, co-owner of four area costume and accessory stores has some ideas to help you easily get one together.
“You may have something at home – say a jean jacket and a tie-dyed shirt to be a hippie for instance," said Cappel. "All they need is a peace sign necklace and a wig—and we are the place to find that accessory to help you add to the costume you actually have in your closet.”
He said pirates and storybook characters are very popular themes this year.
“It’s been a real mixed bag this year,” says Ray Cappel. “Women are not doing as many sexy costumes as they used to. They are doing more fun type costumes and more form-fitting ones. Men are doing wigs, beards, makeup that type of thing. Tutu’s are popular with both men and women” he added.
Cappel said just applying some makeup can give you an instant costume. “Our makeup collection is great for Halloween,” “We have everything from Hollywood grade to a mid-grade.”
The Costume Gallery in Newport said pirates, flappers and gangsters are the store's best sellers this year. Retailer manager Jenna Brandow said that Zombie makeup is also very popular.
They have a makeup artist that has transformed customers into Alice Cooper, Edward Scissorhands and the Joker from Batman. Appointments are needed.
Cappel's is open on Halloween until 6 p.m.
