NEW DELHI (AP) - Lawmakers, rights groups and citizens across India have expressed outrage over the gang rape of a woman on a bus in New Delhi and are urging the government to crack down on crimes against women.

The outpouring of anger is unusual in a country where attacks against women are often ignored and rarely prosecuted.

Opposition lawmakers protesting outside Parliament on Wednesday demanded the death penalty for the rapists.

Demonstrations erupted outside New Delhi's police headquarters demanding swift punishment for the rapists. Angry university students set up roadblocks across the city.

Police say six men raped the 23-year-old medical student and beat her and her companion before throwing them out of the bus Sunday. Four men have been arrested.

navrat and tcates, you both seem to take rape a little lightly? If that was YOUR daughter, sister, mother, aunt, cousin, ect. would you think that some of us on here are being "emotional" or saying the death penatly is overboard? that would be a NO. when you're raped you NEVER forget it. you NEVER trust the same way, love the same way, look at men the same way. You no longer feel safe, question everyones motives, and live with a sense of fear. You have stripped a woman of her security, dignity, respect, and self worth. Yeah the death penalty is appropriate.

Navrat are you serious?????????????????? wow, ignorance..... when you're raped you relive it every damn day. I can't believe you would even make a statement like that. I would rather die than be raped!!!! PLAIN AND SIMPLE IGNORANCE ON YOUR PART....

I vote the death penalty for violent rape of an adult and for ALL sex acts on children. But if, and only if, the trial is short and sweet so the guilty are done in a matter of weeks after being caught. Now we all know trials are not swift and death penalty appropriate crimes are negotiated down to lesser charges all too often. So let's have a trial that cost well into the millions and then let's put the offender in a cell with three squares, education opportunities and a better life then they may have already led. Yea that makes sense America; because everyone has to be treated fairly, right? Yes, it makes sense. Then the victim and all of us can continue to fund the scumbags well being for the rest of his/her life with the taxes we pay. How's that for turnabout.

You say that as if you think being a rape victim is better than being dead - you, or your sister, mother, aunt, g-ma obviously have never been raped (or brother, father, uncle, nephew, g-pa, either for that matter)...and 'survived'. 20 yrs is a freaking gift! GRRR

I would rather be a rape victim than a homicide victim. 20 years for rape is about right.

yep - ever been raped? Heck, in our culture, you are blamed, ostracized, and emotionally?...a part of yourself dies, but in their culture, the woman is fortunate that the govt did not kill her...heck yeah, the death penalty "for not even killing someone" is an "appropriate response". Let me know, once you have walked this path, how you feel about the "concept of what is appropriate response" then.

when you forcibly rape someone (gang or otherwise) you have basically killed their sense of dignity and self worth, not to mention their feeling of security. Death for rape sounds right in this case (cutting their testicles off at least), these men are animals and should be treated as such. NO MERCY !!!!!

Many emotional people have no concept of what is appropriate response.
