DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - An Ohio legislator thinks the state should offer taxpayers the option of getting their Ohio refunds on prepaid debit cards.

State Sen. Eric Kearney says his proposal could save the state money and benefit low-income residents who don't have bank accounts. The Cincinnati Democrat says the option would give them a safe and easy way to get their refunds, avoiding check-cashing fees.

A federal survey found that about 414,000 Ohio households didn't have a checking or savings account last year.

The Dayton Daily News reports some officials are concerned that the program's costs would outweigh its benefits. A U.S. Treasury pilot program was halted after only a small number of taxpayers chose to participate.

Ohioans currently can get refunds by mailed checks or direct deposits into their accounts.

Hey, lets keep catering to the poor at the expense and frustration of those of us who work for a living! My brother could get his tax refund debit card with $1,500 tax refund when he was on unemployment all year! That sounds fair! How about you just do direct deposit like you have in the past. It works. Although, on the flip side, at least the low income people couldn't use their tax refund to buy drugs if it was on a prepaid debit card (I'm not saying all low income people are druggies...but every druggie I know is low income, so hows that for logic)?

No thank you! I do not use nor want a "debit card". "IF" I get a refund, deposit it direct deposit thank you. I believe they "charge" to use a "debit card" also(?) Just another program that cost the working people money in the end.

I wonder why 414,000 Ohio households don't have a bank account. Oh I know why because bank are scams and do whatever they can to get fees. I do not have a bank account either and I am not ashamed of that.

Well, I'll assume when he says it should be offered as an option, it means just that...optional. Otherwise, I can see it now: "Hey Dad, can I borrow $500? I'll pay you back when I get my state income tax refund." "Sorry, son, I don't take debit cards." Sorry, bad idea. I'd prefer the old fashioned method of having a check sent to me, or direct deposit.
