Believe it or not, it's not uncommon to find bats in the roof of your house in our area. The mating season for bats has just started again, and Local 12 Troubleshooter Howard Ain explains why that can make it tricky to remove them.
Bats, in the movie "Batman Begins" , proved to be frightening on the screen. So imagine how you would feel if they were in our own home.
Laronda Razor: "It's not fun. We like Batman the movie but it's no longer fun. So you guys don't like living there with the bats? (Shakes head)"
Yet, they've been living with bats in their North College Hill house on and off for about a year. It all began last summer when they found bugs in their house and called an exterminator.
Razor: "They said the reason why you have bugs is because the bats were nested up in my house. The bats had busted out my siding not on this side but on the other side of the house." They couldn't immediately remove the bats, seen here next to greenery, because they are a protected species.
Razor: "From June to August is their mating season when they're making and making babies in my house so I'm not allowed to kill them because that will kill the babies so I think who protects me and my babies."
Eventually, the exterminator was able to get rid of the bars and new siding was put on the house to make sure the bats wouldn't get back in. But Razor had new problems: "Right here at this window you can hear them in there scratching and screeching."
Once again the bats are back. She called the siding people, who immediately sealed off the areas where the bats got in, but before making sure they got out first. Workers did return a few days later and opened up the area. At this point Razor says because she believes there are dead bats in there, she's very concerned that will bring back the bugs once again. So she really needs to get these bats out of there.
"I've been getting bats out of the house like for a whole year now."
So I called the pest removal company Razor had used last year and they will have someone come out to check for bats.
They can remove any dead bats they find, but say if any are still alive, they must be left there because it's mating season once again.
