A Tri-State family has an alert neighbor to thank for saving their lives.
That person saw flames at a home on Robert Avenue near Harrison in Westwood around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.
The neighbor was able to wake up the family who then got out of the house safely.
Five adults and a child live in the home.
It took 31 firefighters about two hours to put the fire out.
The family does have smoke detectors, but they were not working.
The fire damaged a portion of the basement.
Damage is estimated at $25,000.
Investigators are still looking for the cause.
Firefighters told Local 12 they responded to a fire at the same home on Monday. No word on whether the two are connected.
The Red Cross is now helping the family.
