NEW YORK (AP) - Several women who prosecutors say were targeted by a New York police officer charged in a cannibalism conspiracy are awaiting their turn on the witness stand.
Four women who were alleged targets of 28-year-old Gilberto Valle are scheduled to testify Tuesday. It is the second day of testimony in the officer's trial in federal court in Manhattan.
On Monday, a prosecutor insisted that Valle was serious about conspiring to kidnap, torture, kill and eat women. A defense lawyer said it was all fantasy and no one was in danger of being harmed. Valle's wife, Kathleen Mangan-Valle, testified that she went to the FBI after discovering that Valle had discussed killing her and her friends in conversations with like-minded people on the Internet.
If convicted, Valle could face life in prison.
