Cincinnati Police tell Local 12 they found bags of marijuana inside the apartment where a 40-year-old Avondale man was mauled to death early Wednesday morning by his own dog.

It happened around 2 a.m. in the 3400 block of Cleveland Court.

Investigators tell Local 12 that 40 year old Ronnel Brown called 9-1-1 himself. He told dispatchers that he had been attacked by his 80 pound American bulldog and he believed he was going to pass out. When paramedics arrived, they could not enter the apartment because the dog was "berserk, out-of-control," according to Harold Dates of the SPCA.

Police officers were called and they were forced to shoot the dog six times before it died. Paramedics found Brown inside the apartment, dead.

Officers say the dog was a trained security dog.  According to reports, Brown had bite marks up and down his arms.

Officials with the SPCA tell Local 12 there were also two puppies in the apartment-a male and a female-which are now in the care of the SPCA.  And they found bags of marijuana in the apartment.

Drug dealers train their dogs to attack intruders/possible thieves as dealers are thought to carry large amounts of $$ and have drugs around. That's why many of them have "vicious" breeds around. If the dog was surprised during its sleep (owner came home or got up in middle of night for something), it may have thought owner was intruder.

American Bull Dogs another name for Pitbull. Pitbulls have the record for attacking owners. The its the owner not the breed mantra sounds logical but its not. This repetitive slogan is illogical. Other dog breeds owned in much greater numbers also have equal chances of getting neglectful and abuseful owners yet they adapt to human shortcomings and don't maul people or pets at any where near the rate that pitbulls do. Labs are routinely forgotten and chained in backyards and they are the most popular dog breed in American but they are not the top killers, pitbull are. Beagles are routinely penned up in backyards and ignored and given no human socialization yet they do not pose any threat to humans when they get loose. None. Most dog bites are nothing more than a minor annoyance when they bite, as they rarely break the skin, which is why you don't hear about them on the news. If a normal dog is in a fight it will fight until the opponent submits and then stop. Pitbulls don't bite, They maul. They do not stop when the victim submits, they keep on mauling until the pet or human is left in parts. The other problem with pitbulls is that they are extremely strong, and were bred to have fewer pain receptors, and are able to keep breathing while attacking. This makes it extremely hard for people to stop a pitbull attack in progress. News stories are full of stories of strong men being mauled and three or more men being unable to get a pitbull to let go of its victim. Mortality, Maiming and Mauling by Vicious Dogs, Annals of Surgery, April 2011, is study of dog injuries in hospitals spanning the last 15 years. The study found that you have a more than 2500 times higher chance of dying if attacked by a pitbull. In addition it found that pitbulls caused the highest hospital charges, and the most deaths, dismemberments, permanent disability, and disfigurement of all breeds. The study also found that pitbulls attack children, and owners much more often than other breeds AND IT I

Why is everyone referring to this dog as a pit bull, Did you really listen to the story? An American Bulldog is a total different dog. Pitbulls already get a bad enough rap.And an American Bulldog is a very gentle loving protective creature. Love my American Bull <3

I'd be interesed in knowing what provoked this dog. My family has always owned American Bulldogs, not one time have I seen them even remotely mean. Usually very lazy. But, protective of our home, grandchildren and myself. But, All I have to do is tell him it's o.k. and he immediately sits and becomes very iteractive with lots of sugar. I'm sure more will come out about this dog owner and the way he treated his animals. You get what you put into the babies. R.I.P American Bulldog.

RideOrDie513.com, if you own a big dog that is capable of doing some serious damage if it ever goes rogue or crazy, keep a gun close. i love dogs! but if a dog EVER attacks me, or anybody around me and it's not defense,I'm not waiting on 911 to respond, i'll put the dog down immediately, via 40S&W! i feel sorry the victim in this case, that's a very painful and horrific way to die. There is no reasoning with these vicious dog advocates. They try to tell you that there is no difference between an alligator and a gecko ,its all in the training. They place their perverted love of these monsters above natural concern for humans including children. They are nuts!

Geez Lemmelz I cant explain it any simpler for you. The lab you speak of was either extremely over weight or a mixed breed. The size of the mouth doesn't necessarily decide the extent of the injury, but instead the strength of the jaw muscles in the animal, you should know this since your a smart dog trainer. The muscles in the jaw of a pit bull are ten times stronger than that of lab. Again making the pit much more "capable" of doing extreme damage.....

I love my American Bulldog. She weighs in at a whopping 110, and plays side by side with my two year old. She is sweet, loyal and naturally protective of our home. The story reads this dog was trained as a guard dog. I think thats their way of saying the dog was mean. Or, perhaps the dog was protecting the puppies in the home and bit the owner? Anyway, an American bulldog and a couple of puppies in an apartment building sounds pretty rough. I'm sure tensions were high! RIP to the dog, and the man.
