A man accused of causing the deaths of two people in a car crash, appeared in a Kenton County court today. A judge says Richard Michael Beers can continue to drive, despite the protests of the prosecutor, as he awaits trial on two counts of reckless homicide.
Prosecutors say Beers blatantly ran a stop sign and crashed into an Independence couple last August. Brian and Melissa Hehman and their beloved dog died in a crash with four vehicles on Kentucky State Route 17, also known as Madison Pike, near Richardson, on August 5, 2011.
The family says the Hehman's were on their way to a family barbecue when the accident happened. Beers now faces 2-10 years in prison if he's convicted on both charges.
A judge allowed him to remain free on $5000 bond.
